Editorial coordinator

We are an independent non-profit newsroom that develops investigative journalism – a public interest task that promotes free, capable media and open, accountable, just democracy.

We do so via:

Investigations: Developing best practice by doing stories that are accurate and fair, advance methods and standards, expose wrongdoing and empower people to hold power to account.

Investigations support: Helping others do it too via editorial collaboration and training.

Advocacy: Campaigning, exercising laws and litigating to help secure the information rights – access to information and media freedoms – that are the lifeblood of our field.

We are based in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town and publish via www.amabhungane.org and a range of publication partners.

We are seeking to appoint an editorial coordinator – who will lead, manage, and have impact across amaB’s range of activities – working closely with the managing partner and the editorial team, as well as with coordinators in the operating, digital, and advocacy portfolios. 

This is a management role. 

Purpose: Provide editorial and organisational leadership and mentorship •  Support the managing partner on editorial functions • Support the managing partner and operating coordinator on organisational sustainability • Complement the activities within the advocacy and digital portfolios • Produce stories too • As a management role, oversight of all amaB’s areas of work and functions, including investigations support. 

Key deliverables: Triage (story selection), story development/management and forensic editing – in collaboration with the managing partner  • Produce investigative stories too • Provide input into advocacy, digital and operating portfolios • Assist with overall managerial oversight of the organisation, including investigations support, as part of the management team •  Assist the managing partner and operating coordinator where necessary with fundraising, financial administration and compliance.

Applicants must: Proven track record in investigative journalism, editing and newsroom management • Be a team player and mentor • Have a fair grasp of organisational administration, including compliance and financial administration • 

The successful applicant will ideally be based in Johannesburg and report to the managing partner.
