Tabelo Timse

Tabelo holds a Master’s in Journalism from Nelson Mandela University. She began her journalism career as a TV reporter and radio current affairs producer at the SABC regional office in Port Elizabeth, before realising that her passion lay in print media. In 2005, Tabelo participated in the Avusa graduate programme and went on to work as a general reporter at The Herald and Weekend Post newspapers in Port Elizabeth. In 2009, she moved to Johannesburg and covered the SADC region for Agence France-Presse (AFP). She joined amaBhungane in April 2012. Her area of interest lies in investigating the relationship between extractive industries rural communities, traditional leadership and government. In 2018, Tabelo won the Vodacom Journalist of the Year award (Politics category) for her work on two whistleblowers who tried to expose corruption linked to the Guptas’ Estina dairy farm project in Vrede. That same year, she was part of the team that won the Taco Kuiper Award for Investigative Journalism, for their work on the #Guptaleaks. In 2021, Tabelo was awarded the French-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law in recognition of her tireless efforts, and the work of amaBhungane, in advancing the cause of the rule of law, social justice, and the strengthening of participatory governance in South Africa.
